Getting Fresh at Prahran Market - Melbourne
Famous for fine fresh produce, hard-to-find specialty items and good old-fashioned service Melbourne's oldest and very famous Prahran Market goes all the way back to the gold rush days of the 1850's.
Since then it has been through several rejuvenations and expansions from the days of the Great Depression through World War II and onto 1950 where on Boxing Day the fruit and veg hall was destroyed by fire.
In the 80's the market was a pivotal place where chef's sought the best ingredients to experiment with their new fusion creations, while today many top chefs still make the visit to explore what's new and in season as they ready their upcoming menus.
The Prahran Market is a great place to visit anytime but the traditional Saturday morning shop sees a bustling atmosphere of ‘food theater’ throughout the Market with a lot of genuine, knowledgeable traders who truly know their stuff, showcasing everything from the highest quality fruit and veg to a wide range of certified organic products, sustainable seafood, free-range meat and poultry, gourmet deli items and an interesting and varied mix of sought after eateries and specialty stores.
A few notable places to stop are Maker & Monger for one of their sensational Grilled Cheese Toasties, Casa Delicatess for their amazing range of Deli Goods and be sure to grab some coffee from Jaspers or get one from Market Lane. If green shells are your thing, then you can't go wrong by dropping by the Mussel Pot.
Prahran Market also acts a bustling weekday lunch stop for many a local resident and worker from the surrounding area, with so much on offer this is one lunch hour well spent.
