Brilliant Breakfasts at Journeyman

Is Melbourne the breakfast capital of the world?

We don’t know but there’s no doubt that Melbourne does breakfast well and there’s plenty of amazing places to choose from when it comes to getting your AM feed on. One destination to put on your breakfast bucket list – if that’s actually a thing, is the Journeyman Café on Chapel Street, Windsor.

Having already well and truly established itself, this was a visit to see if the Journeyman lived up to the hype – which it did.

Stepping in the door you are greeted by a sophisticated, elongated space handily designed by renowned Melbourne architect Chris Connell.

The dark and moody semi-industrial interior is punctuated nicely by warm wooden tones. Concrete floors, exposed ceiling plumbing with gabled wooden rafters and a single sky light helps to complete the look at the same time serving to illuminate the rear end of the space.

There’s a nice contrast between the black and red brick walls that run the length of one side of café which also features long bench tables with custom wooden bench seating. The use of elegant black and white rimmed crockery is on theme working well with the simple, pared back style of the place.

Despite being extremely busy the service is friendly and efficient, and we soon find ourselves presented one of their signature breakfast dishes the Eggs, Avocado and Peas w/ Chili Jam (AED 52).

So what you get here are two nicely poached eggs set to the side of a mini mountain of avocado topped with goats cheese on a lovely piece of sourdough bread with some crispy sweet potato chips thrown in.

This was a pleasure eat with the sweetness of the jam contrasting beautifully with the earthiness of the goat’s cheese and avocado. The addition of the crispy bran puffs while maligned by some offer a unique crunch and complemented the perfectly poached eggs.  Overall, it was generous portion and lovely food that hit spot and when backed up by some excellent coffee you can’t really go wrong.

The bottom-line here is simple: great coffee, great space, great breakfast.
