Making the most of Maiz Tacos
Starting out as one of the cities original taco trucks, Maiz Tacos now has a lovely designed home in JLT, where they knock out Award Winning Tacos and awesome burgers under the Good Burger banner.
Why we haven’t been earlier is still somewhat of a mystery but we’re glad we finally made it.
The interiors take on a minimalist retro vibe with muted pastel tones and simple seating arrangements. There is very little information to distract the diner with a sole image of the original food truck and some recent awards adoring the walls.
This means it’s on the food and there’s only one way to do it and that’s to order as much as possible, so in no particular order we grabbed:
The Maiz Guacamole (50 AED) which was excellent with is original take on the classic combining sour cream and corn pieces to perfection.
Pollo Loco (40 AED), Carne Asada (55 AED), Birria (55 AED), the El Jefe (45 AED) and the Gringa (45 AED). They were all decent and these Tacos are larger in size than other places and each serve comes as two pieces.
For us the clear stand out was the Birria which was a naughty but nice deep fried dipping taco that consists of perfectly soft lamb shoulder and melted cheese that is served with a consume that you dip each bite into. It was spectacular and easy to see why it’s a crowd favorite.
Some of the others we less convincing with he fish tacos being our least favorite due to be quite soggy, however a special shout out goes to the Asada - which packs a lot of flavor and is what I think of when I think of an authentic taco.
While not quite hitting the high notes of other JLT taquerias, this is still a great spot to try.
