Exploring The Cult of Ziggy
Blink and you'll miss it. Ziggy's Eatery is a tiny little place just near the Balaclava Train Station that has gained cult status for their burgers, wraps and salads.
This narrow space is reminiscent of an old school Fish n' Chip shop or Yiros joint but with a slightly more modern twist. The burgers are made in front of you - either to go or you can choose to dine in sitting at one of the four tables that line the skateboard laden red brick wall.
The guys have clearly put a lot of effort into their design and marketing, the overall approach seems to be one that's about taking it easy and having fun. The playful illustrations and graphics reflect that ethos and are done really nicely.
As you can tell, we've been on a bit of a burger mission of late, so let's move onto the food. In this instance the highly recommended Chili Burger. At close to 38 Dirhams, it's not as an expensive option as other places and offers you a decent size beef patty along with some grilled onion, fried jalapenos, tomato, melted cheese and lettuce. The whole thing is topped off with their home made version of Tabasco sauce and some aioli.
Let me tell you, the hot sauce has some real kick! I mean seriously.
Squashing the whole thing down to eat - it's immediately obvious that the crispy onion rings give a good bite and add a bit of texture that combines just nicely with the ooozing melted cheese. The patty is decent and cooked well but somehow not quite as juicy as it could’ve been, throw in a pretty standard sesame bun that seemed to lack a little softness and the end result is a great but not overly amazing burger. To the upside, the staff were super cool while the beats in the background were large.
While the burger wasn't as epic as some recent adventures, in all Ziggy's was a highly enjoyable experience that still left me happy for checking it out and ultimately - that's what going on food adventures is all about.
